FloWTurb Research Group Home page

FloWTurb is a tidal energy research collaboration between the University of Edinburgh, University of Strathclyde, University of the Highlands and Islands, University of Heriot Watt, Marine Alliance for Science and Technology and Marine Science Scotland. The project is funded by the EPSRC through the SuperGen Marine program.

The project aims to advance the knowledge of how complex wave and tidal current induced turbulence interactions will affect tidal turbine life cycle and performance. In order to achieve this, research is being conducted in: 3D hydrodynamic modelling, field measurements, the advancement of tank testing facilities and scale model testing and fatigue load prediction software. The goal is to provide tools for device developers that will allow accurate assessments of blade and component life for a range of deployment locations, improving both design and operation and maintenance strategies to advance the industry.
